Precision Cuts is a two-person exhibition featuring new work by Markham-based artists Alan Hasselfeldt and Judith Livingston. Working separately, Hasselfeldt explores natural rock formations in sculpture, whereas Livingston incorporates the tissues of designer sewing patterns into paintings of rockscapes. When brought together, the two bodies of work explore collectively the dramatic forces of nature that alter the geological complexion of our country over the vastness of time.
The artists explore the continual 're-designing' of our natural landforms, however, it does compel us to see these rock formations with a new perspective and admire the near-surgical precision in which this is done. As Livingston explains: "The precision of the cut is also key for the designer, tailor and sculptor. The directional and instructional lines in the patterns are representative of the lines of the engineer and surveyor, and are equally critical to the overall project."
