Overview

Discover printmaking and start making tracks. Judith Livingston takes students through the process of printmaking, paring fun techniques with unusual materials. Stamp, rub and press to create art that tells a story. Inspired by the Varley's summer exhibitions, this two-day workshop includes a gallery tour, artist's demonstrations, and exercises to help students apply printmaking techniques to their own practice. Materials not included; Supply list available online. Please note: an additional fee of $10 will be collected on the first day of class for speciality materials.

 After a tour of the exhibition you will be introduced to exciting printmaking techniques.

Day 1 covers DIY stamping, frottage, and off-set printing.  Day 2 is Gelli-plate printing on new and pre-printed papers. Combining prints and techniques will allow you to 'tell' a story.  Prints may be used in mixed media and collage.

** Please note: $10 will be collected Day 1 for the following workshop materials.

Mat boards and Acrylic Gloss Gel for Collagraphs (various sizes and dimensions)

Stamp making materials - 4" x 4" soft lino

Acrylic Printmaking inks

Some Specialty papers (various sizes and dimensions)

Supplies:  *General for Both Days*

White Plastic Cloth (Dollar Store)

Wooden spoon -and - palette knife

Newspapers - and - paper towels

Box Freezer Paper (Reynolds - Loblaws)

Small mister for water

9" x 12"   spiral-ring mixed media or sketchbook (notes and samples)

Pencil, ruler, and Black Sharpie

Brayer (if you have one)  or (may use Gallery brayers)

Assortment of brushes

Papers for printing - (old prints, special papers, book pages, sheet music)

Small jars or containers with lids to store your acrylic printmaking inks

      Optional - acrylic paints or metallic acrylic paints  

For Day 1- Stamping (Lino-cuts), Frottage (Collagraphs) & Off-set Printing

For lino-cuts:

Simple bold image to fit 4" x 4" lino    (optional)  

Knives, gouges and brayers may be borrowed from the gallery

For collagraphs:

Adhesive - Elmer's or Weldbond clear-drying glue - and - bristle gluing brush

String/ cord, rice, split peas, pieces corrugated cardboard, stencils, low-profile objects

For off-set printing:

Leaves, lace, small doilies,  feathers, flat but textural items (if possible)

 Day 2 - Gelli-Plate printing on new or pre-printed paper

 Gelli-plate purchased or  DIY from recipe received on Day 1

Prints created from Day 1

Small bottle hand sanitizer - and - Baby Wipes (Dollar Store)

Mark making tools (no sharp points) - combs, stencils, textured objects, lino  and collagraph blocks , mesh, textured sponges, circles, jar lids, texture or embossed mats ...etc.

Instructor also brings several mark making items that you may use.

Brayers may be borrowed from the gallery
